Tuesday Talk :: Puddleduck Paper Co.

Welcome to a new Tuesday feature! Once a month, I'll be posting Tuesday Talk - a conversation between me & (usually) another stationery/paper person. We will talk paper. We'll talk life!

Mattie Tiegreen of Puddleduck Paper Co. is a Southern kindred spirit. Design-wise, especially. I love her use of color, type, envelopes as part of the design & not an after thought...

So! Let's chat...

Puddleduck Paper Co is such a fun name! Where does it come from?
My favorite question! As I’m sure you can imagine, I get it a lot. My mom used to call me “Puddleduck” after the character Jemima Puddle-Duck in the Beatrix Potter stories – favorite childhood books of mine. When I needed a business name, mom suggested the obvious. I thought it was silly at first, but it stuck! It’s definitely memorable.

We are heavy into wedding season! What kinds of choices are you seeing brides make this season? Any similar themes or colors this year?
Yellow is a wildly common color scheme in my recent designs – which I am loving. It’s my favorite color and can be seen in some of my favorite designs, Puddleduck’s branding, and in our own wedding a few years ago.

Did you design your wedding invitations? Can we see??
I did! However - if you can believe it - we have NO pictures of any paper from the wedding. I guess I had other things on my mind that day..? :)

I LOVE your envelope choices. Tell me about how you choose your colors.
Yellow! Just kidding. I think the envelope can make or break the wedding suite. The most beautiful card can get lost in a plain envelope if you’re not careful. I choose and suggest envelope colors based on the bride’s color scheme but tend to suggest a complimentary color as opposed to going the ‘matchy-matchy’ route. I like an unexpected pop of color.

Is that your calligraphy on your blog? If yes, when did you learn? If not, do tell where it came from!
That’s my handwriting. I am self-taught (and still learning!) and have such an appreciation for the craft of hand lettering.

How did the National Stationery Show go for you this year? This was your first year! Congrats! How did you prepare?
Thank you! It. was. amazing. I have been toiling over attending for two years and came very close in 2011. It just wasn’t in the cards for me then, but I’m a firm believer in a greater plan. 2013 was the year for me, I suppose.

It’s so much planning, organization, and – um – money. I worked non-stop from December until May printing samples, measuring and designing the booth, calling vendors, creating a catalog and pricing structure, and reaching out to other exhibitors for advice.

I still kind of can’t believe I did it. I am so, so grateful for those who believed in me and humbled by the response I received at the show. It was incredible to meet some of my greatest inspirations, make new friends in the industry and grow this little paper adventure of mine. I’m already planning for 2014!

Tell me your favorite/most memorable/funniest greeting card you’ve received.
My sister’s mail tends to make me cry – happy tears. She is my biggest cheerleader and seems to always know when I need snail mail. It’s almost always a Quotable Card or letterpress ditty that says just what I needed to hear. Sisters are good like that, huh?

Last year when the military separated my husband and I for five long months, she sent me this card (https://propertopper.com/store/item/quotable-larson-believe-in-yourself/in/263) It still makes me smile.

Do you have personalized stationery & what do you use it for?
I do! I send way too much mail. Our mailman is a rock star, bless him. I use my stationery for thank you’s, of course, but also for pick-me-up and just-because cards for friends and family. They can tell you, though, the designs change constantly. I get inspired and make new designs for myself before I debut them in the shop.

Who are a few of your favorite Etsy shops?
Oh, so many!

Should I stop? One More.

You are a fellow Southerner. How do you stay cool in the hot Georgia summer?
We love hiking, so we tend to escape especially hot Georgia weekends with a trip to the mountains. The lake is another favorite of ours - nothing beats the water. If we’re in town, we tend to post up on the porch with the ceiling fan going and sip cold beer while our pups play in the yard. To us, that’s the good life.

Oooooh...I miss a porch. We have a screened in porch at our place in North Carolina with a ceiling fan. I know exactly where you are coming from.

Mattie! Thank you!! Keep up the amazing work :)

Paaaaaaart-ay!!

Last night's trunk show was loads of fun. My friend Eric of Eric Vitale Photography took tons of pics...not the one above. That was my quickie iPhone shot. He'll be sending me some quick takes in a week or so & I am anxious to share them. I'm sure they'll be as awesome as usual. I love this shot he took at the Columbus Citizen's Foundation's Scholarship Fundraiser last year. It was a casino night!

Looks like fun! He also has a budding retail business on Etsy. He has a great eye for composure & color.

After a quick final clean up this morning, I am finishing up last minute things for the Spring Handmade Cavalcade tomorrow. You're coming right?? Williamsburg, Brooklyn. 10am to 5pm @ The Space. Check out the map here for directions.

Onward & upward! Happy Friday!

Paper Porn :: Laundry Day

Today is National Hanging Out Day! It's a day that encourages people to learn about energy consumption & reducing it by drying your laundry outside on a clothes line.

In honor of that, Paper Porn is featuring this Clothespin Art Print by Kristina Proffitt from Baby Bird and Bub on Etsy. There is also a set of 3 of these laundry-themed prints. Super cute!

Obviously these are for hanging inside...not on your line. :)

Don't suck at sending greeting cards

I hear this all the time, "I wish I was better at sending greeting cards! I'm terrible."

What? I'm confused. This is not hard!! In a few simple steps you can go from Greeting Card Zero to Greeting Card Hero.

Here are 4 simple steps to improve your Happy Birthday Card sending ratio:

First: You need to have the cards on hand.

When you see cards you like, buy them. It doesn't matter that you have someone specific in mind or not. They're for someone. If you want to jump start your collection, go to your local Hallmark & pick out 5 that you like. Get a mix - birthday, thank you, just sayin' hello...

And/or start with a set like these from Kate Spade. Or these from my shop. Everything you need in one little box!

Second: Buy stamps!!

Yes, stamps. Remember those? It's good to have these on hand because you can have all the best intensions in the world, but your card can't be sent without a stamp. With USPS online, you don't have to even go to the dreaded post office to buy them!

Third: Keep a calendar

Put birthdays on it, national holidays, anniversaries. There are free printable calendars all over the internet, or  this one from Organized Home, that you can print, fill out & put on your fridge, bulletin board...mirror...wherever you see it on a regular basis.

If your calendar is digital (all hail the Google calendar!!), set up reminders that these events are coming up so you'll actually follow through with sending the card. I set up the calendar entry with everything I might need to know, like the year the person was born (married, etc.) and their address.

I know what you're saying now. "But, Kerry, I don't have anyone's addresses anymore!"

Step 4 - collect addresses. And guess what? There's an app for that. Try Postable. You send out an email with a unique link to your address book. Your peeps fill out their information & voila! Your address problem is solved.

I also came across this form on Google docs, if you have a Google account. Again, it's pretty simple to fill out. You can customize the template, add or delete information fields. When your peeps respond to it, Google puts it in a nice little spreadsheet for you in your Google docs, accessible from anywhere!

You know what else is good? Saving envelopes from Christmas & birthday cards. That's a great way to get someone's recent address.

However you decide to do it, just ask for them! I bet you'll get people's addresses AND their birthdays in return. I'd go one step further & predict that they'll be inspired by your effort & ask for your information as well.

Last but not least: Keep all of this handy.

Don't hide these cards away in your closet. Get a nice box or tray to keep them in. If they HAVE to be in a drawer, make sure it's one that you access easily & often so that you don't forget you have cards & stamps. Oh and pens! I buy myself nice Pilot pens! I love to use them.

Follow thru!

Now, when your calendar reminds you that Aunt Nancy's birthday is coming up at the end of the week, you can grab a card, stamp it & send it on it's merry way.

As I said, I have a few sets in my shop that can get you started. A variety of sentiments for occasions of all kinds. Or this one for cards that can be used for literally anything.

Remember! Email or texts are great in a pinch, but nothing will replace the sincerity of putting pen to paper. What do you think? Can you do it? Yes you can!

To help inspire you, I started a Pinterest board on stationery & accessories. I'll pin fun cards, great stationery boxes, interesting return address stamps (omg, that's a whole other post!). Come along for the paper-fuled ride!

Any of you already masters of the greeting card? Let me know your strategies for sending cards in the comments (or on twitter or Facebook). The rest of you get out there & start sending some snail mail!

A Mitten Built for Two

How cute is this mitten?! Never heard of a couple's mitten before, but this is cool. I found it on Etsy this morning. It's the Red Heart Shaped Lovers Mitten by I Sew Naked.

This would make a great prop for a Valentine's Day couple shoot. And/or add your wedding date & make it a photo Save The Date for any time of the year. So creative!

High 5 for Friday

A smattering of goodness from the week! Like...

Alan Davies is hilarious!! No matter your opinion on cats, you will laugh at this. I promise.

I am updating all my Christmas listings on my Etsy shop. I was so wrapped up in creating new cards & going to my first craft fair that I didn't really do that last year. Hence, I have a ton of new things coming to the shop. Very exciting!

It was our niece Molly's birthday yesterday! Isn't she cute? We celebrated with a big chocolate cake that she decorated herself.

I made her this card. It's an idea for kids' cards I've had for a while - simple, with just a number on it. Something they can actually read! I think I'll make some more & test them out with numbers 1 to 5. What do you think?

For the first time ever, I am having a hard time keeping this post to 5 things. Usually I get to the last one & struggle to think of number 5. But number 5 has to be...
Going to see Kermit Ruffins at Brooklyn Bowl last weekend with Mr. B, my brother, plus other assorted characters. Please pardon the less-than-steller pictures. Dark venue + Brooklyn Lager = shoddy camera work.

Happy Friday!

High 5 for Friday!

I'm all about apps this week...

{from top left, clockwise}
1. Etsy app - how I love to browse with thee...
2. on the right is Google Chrome. It's literally changed my life this week.
3. Under that is the Square app. I check in on my sales from anywhere I have a cell signal.
4. Instagram - do you need a reason to love it? It's just awesome.
5. Last but not least - my twitter app

Did you hear that?

It was me exhaling. For a few reasons...

First, I'm sitting down. Second, I'm sitting down AT HOME. Third, I'm sitting down at home & writing on my blog. Now I want to stand up, scream Yippee!! and click my heels together!!

What do talk about first?? I should probably share the most relevant information - I have 2 new products out for Father's Day. Ta-da! Presenting This is a Father's Day Card and Dad Rocks...

 {Check them out here and here on my Etsy shop}

I'd love to share some of the work I've been doing, outside of stationery, but that wouldn't be kosher with my clients. So, I'll just say that I've been working with my husband Chris, creating some fun visuals for a new business website that will launch in the Fall.

Also, our company - well, our other company that is really more my husband's I guess. It is called Velocity Made Good (VMG for short) - is helping raise revenue for a ski/snowboard website called Unofficial Networks. In normal people speak, that means we're going to help them sell ads & create marketing partnerships & events with cool brands to make us all some money.

We went out there in May to get to know them & kick off our partnership. Out there is Lake Tahoe, California, at the base of Squaw Valley. Yeah...not a shabby place to work. See...

There is not a filter on that picture. It's just that amazing there. Oh, and there was a super moon while we were there - a full moon that appears even bigger & fuller than normal. It was so cool to see it come up over the lake. The pictures don't really do it justice.

It was also Cinco de Mayo, but we won't get into that... If you are looking to laugh for an hour, check out Unofficial's original production called G.N.A.R. the Movie. So. Funny. It's possible that this could be considered NSFW, but it's really pretty tame.

I'll show some work for that project later. For now, I have to get off this computer. Today is my niece's birthday & cupcakes must be eaten. You guys may have read my post from her party last year. Look at her now...Kids grow like weeds!

Happy weekend!
